 Receptiveness to the Holy Spirit

by Larry Spencer

The sum of all the law and the prophets is found in loving God
with all your heart, mind and strength and to love your neighbor
as yourself. If that is the primary law, certainly that is a primary
thing in the sanctification of the saints. Now, it goes without
saying that you cannot love a person unless you know that
person. It is by the indwelling Holy Spirit that you know the Father
and the Son. Seek out His presence within you in humility and
reverence, with a quiet heart that waits in faith.

Immerse yourself in the Word, stopping occasionally to
meditate on a passage and anticipate the Spirit's illumination.
Block out everything else in your mind except what it is that the
Word has brought to your attention.

Desire to have a clean heart that is continually aware of any
nuance of sin in your heart or your thoughts - the Spirit will reveal
these sins plainly.  Always be lifting up your sinful nature in deep
humility to the Lord Jesus Christ who has taken on all of the
devastating fallout of your sin. Begin to know the love of Christ as
revealed through the Spirit within you. Know that while He is high
above everything imaginable, He dwells with the lowly in heart.
He not only desires you to be a son or daughter but that you
personally, experientially know this; He will pour out His love into
your heart through the Holy Spirit.

As you come to know His presence and participate in His
wisdom and truth, you will desire more and more to be cleansed
of sin as it is revealed to you. You will learn that the blessed
fellowship with Him is not felt when you have distanced yourself
by conscious sin in your life. You will want to be rid of it simply
because you love Him and you desire to worship Him. You are
already saved by His mercy in Christ, only worship and growing
in the knowledge of the riches of His grace remain.

Know that the trials you face are for your benefit; they are a
loving and measured disclosure to your conscious mind at the
perfect time of your sinful nature. While showing you the truth of
the depravity of separateness from Him, He makes new
revelation clear to you regarding the mind and heart of God in
Jesus. These things are shown to you so that you can come to full
faith that you are a new creation and have the capacity to live in
Him without that residual sin that resides in your old nature.
Sanctification is about coming to an actual experience of the
truth that you are a new creation, pure and holy in Christ. When
you have not fully known this you are still growing in faith, you still
believe yourself to be identified with your sinful nature which is as
a shadow passing in the night and will not be with you forever.
There is no reason for you to be stifled in growing in your faith;
the Spirit of the living God is right with you, so close you can
hardly see Him. He is ready to be your Helper; He knows every
nook and cranny of your heart as no other person can know.

There is no holiness apart from Him and you must be holy as He
is holy. Therefore worship and draw close to Him with all your
heart. Everything outside of Him is unclean, full of deceit and
every kind of hurtfulness; let us draw close to our Father who
loves us. Let Him be our sanctuary. Go to Him in that secret
place where the wretchedness of this world can't enter and drink
of the living water. Your sanctification is your falling deeper and
deeper in love and fellowship with the Spirit of God. It is time to
loosen your grip on that old sinful nature as you look upon the
Cross in repentance and faith and upon the Spirit in hope.
