Words to Live by

Bad words

These quotes are from thinkers throughout the ages. I think it shows that humans have long known that hope is more than a word, but a living thing. Hope is not wishful thinking, but seeing life as it really is. The world may seem like a downright mean place, but we persevere and are rewarded. Hope is not a concept, rather hope is alive.

If one has truly lost hope, one would not be on hand to say so. -Eric Bentley

Hope is a strange invention--
A Patent of the Heart--
In unremitting action
Yet never wearing out.

'Hope' is the thing with feathers,
 That perches in the soul,
And sings the tunes without the words,
 And never stops at all.
Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

Hope has two beautiful daughters Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are. -Augustine of Hippo

A Christian will part with anything rather than his hope; he knows that hope will keep the heart both from aching and breaking, from fainting and sinking; he knows that hope is a beam of God, a spark of glory, and that nothing shall extinguish it till the soul be filled with glory. -Thomas Brooks (1608-81)

Whatever is the object of a saint?s hope is the subject of his prayer. -William Gurnall (1616-79)

The hope of glory is to the justified man like a cool, perennial fountain in a secluded garden, to which ever and anon he retires from the busy, noisy world and, sitting down by its holy stream while he meditates on the freeness and perfectness of the right he has to the fountain of immortality, drinks in with holy meditations new foretastes of the blessedness which is to come. -Robert Murray M?Cheyne (1813-34)

The hope of Christ is the hope of His redeemed: ?I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also? (John 14:3). This promise is as precious to Christ as it ever can be to us. The joy of meeting is surely no less for the coming Bridegroom than for the waiting bride. The life of Christ in glory is one of longing expectation; the full glory only comes when His beloved are with Him. -Andrew Murray (1828-1917)

There are no hopeless situations, only people who think hopelessly. -Winifred Newman (20th century)

Hoping does not mean doing nothing. It is not fatalistic resignation. It means going about our assigned tasks, confident that God will provide the meaning and the conclusion. It is not compelled to work away at keeping up appearances with a bogus spirituality. It is the opposite of desperate and panicky manipulations, of scurrying and worrying.  And hoping is not dreaming. It is not spinning an illusion or fantasy to protect us from our boredom or our pain. It means a confident, alert expectation that God will do what he said he will do. It is imagination put in the harness of faith. It is a willingness to let God do it in his way and in his time. It is the opposite of making plans that we demand that God put into effect, telling him both how and when to do it. -Eugene Peterson (20th century)

I cannot, indeed, see through my cross to the far end; yet I believe I am in Christ?s books, and in his decree (not yet unfolded to me), a man triumphing, dancing and singing on the other side of the Red Sea, and laughing and praising the Lamb, over beyond time, sorrow, deprivation, prelates? indignation, losses, want of friends, and death. -Samuel Rutherford (1600-61)

The Opportunity is Today
Our work is solemn
Therefore we dare not trifle
Our task is difficult

Therefore we dare not delay
Out path is narrow
Therefore we dare not wander
But our prize will be glorious
Therefore we dare not faint

Just A Closer Walk With Thee
I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I'll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.
When my feeble life is o'er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o'er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Hope is a state of mind, not of the world. Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good. -
